A Better Grinder Won’t Fix the Wrong Coffee Approach
Jun 24, 2025You invested in a better grinder.
You followed the advice—upgrade your gear, tighten your variables, aim for a more even grind.
And yet… the coffee still isn’t what you hoped for.
Does that sound familiar?
It’s one of the most common frustrations I hear—from home brewers and pros alike.
The Grinder Isn’t the Fix
You hear it everywhere—on forums, in YouTube videos, from baristas behind the counter:
“Grind is everything.”
It’s treated like a universal truth.
And to be fair, grind size does matter. But the grinder itself?
That’s just the tool. It doesn’t recognize your beans. It doesn’t account for roast development.
And it definitely can’t make flavor decisions for you.
Even the most precise grinder won’t help if you’re aiming in the wrong direction.
You’ll just end up with a more consistent version of the same problem.
What Actually Controls Flavor?
If your goal is to make better coffee, the real lever isn’t the machine—it’s extraction.
And extraction depends on how you grind in relation to what you’re brewing.
Start by asking: What do I want this cup to taste like?
- Do you want clarity and brightness?
- Or something rounder, with more body and depth?
The grind you choose should support that goal.
But that choice also depends on your brew method. Pour over extracts differently from French press. AeroPress behaves differently than moka pot. Every adjustment changes what ends up in your cup.
So instead of chasing someone else’s “perfect setting,” you need to develop the skill of reading the beans—and making thoughtful adjustments.
So What Should You Do?
Think in terms of outcomes, not equipment.
Use your grinder to shape the flavor you’re after, not just to follow instructions.
And be willing to adapt. Even the same beans can require different adjustments as they age or rest post-roast.
Better flavor doesn’t come from better gear alone.
It comes from understanding what your tools can—and can’t—do.
